ENDOVENOUS LASER ABLATION - Laser Vein Removal

Usually long rather straight veins that course up and down the leg are treated when these are the source of the abnormal blood flow pattern resulting in the venous hypertension that in turn is the cause of the varicose veins. Using ultrasound the small laser fiber or radiofrequency catheter is inserted into the vein to be treated through a needle in the calf or low thigh. The heat energy these devices emit as they are withdrawn causes damage to the cells along the inside wall of the vein. The result is closure and thrombosis (clotting) of the vein. The clot is adherent to the vein wall and does not break off or migrate into the open circulation.

The advantages of the minimally invasive endovenous ablation procedures include the ease of outpatient application, the need for only local anesthesia, absence of pain and discomfort, absence of scars or permanent marks, quick return to usual activities, low risk and high degree of safety, and excellent short and long term results. There is no need for general or spinal anesthesia, recovery, or an overnight stay in hospital in contradistinction to the now outdated “vein stripping” operation where in addition to the need for general anesthesia, there were significant risks and postoperative discomfort and disabilities for a considerable period of time. A patient undergoing endovenous laser ablation can expect the chance of successful closure of the treated vein to be 98%. With radiofrequency the results are almost as good.

At Dallas Vein Specialists we know that every patient is different, and each patient will require specific treatment measures depending on his or her complaints and findings. Each minimally invasive treatment, whether endovenous ablation, microphlebectomy, foam chemical ablation, or a combination of these may be applied to accomplish the goal of abolishment of symptoms and unsightly result of long standing venous high pressure in the legs.
