In the United States certification in a medical specialty is voluntary for a physician. In contrast a physician must obtain a medical license in a particular state by meeting minimal standards in order to treat patients in that state. Physicians who have special interest and training in some specialty field of medicine may seek board certification in that area. If a physician meets all of the stated and usually demanding criteria of the board, certification may be granted. Thus certification is based on more than interest. Each specialty board has rigorous standards of education, ethics, experience, and skill that must be met.
